Paul Edmund Davies
Flute
Paul Edmund-Davies made his Wigmore Hall debut in 1978. This led to numerous radio recitals and television appearances. He was invited to play with the English Chamber Orchestra in 1982 and in 1984 joined the London Symphony Orchestra as Co-Principal Flute, being appointed to Principal Flute in 1987.
As well as performing concerti with both the ECO and the LSO, he has appeared as guest Principal with many London orchestras and has recorded regularly as an orchestral player and soloist with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
In 1988 he performed Berstein'sHalil, for solo flute and orchestra, conducted by the composer, and was consequently invited to perform in the Ode to Freedom Christmas concert in East Berlin, again conducted by Bernstein. Since then, he has performed concerti with Rostropovich, Michael Tilson Thomas, Danielle Gatti, Kent Nagano and Ion Marin and chamber music with Andre Previn. He has recorded a solo CD (accompanied by LSO Principal Keyboard player John Alley) for EMI's Virtuoso Series.
In 1997 Paul toured extensively, giving recitals, concerti and master-classes in America, New Zealand, Australia and Italy, and again in March / April 1999, gave concerts and master-classes in Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia. Future Engagements include solo performances with Pierre Boulez and the London Symphony Orchestra in London, Carnegie Hall New York, Salzburg, Vienna, Cologne and Edinburgh.
Paul Edmund-Davies is also a member of the Deutz Trio, formed with the LSO Principals Roy Carter and John Alley - their first CD was released in April 1995. The first week of January 1999 saw the arrival of their second disc and the third one, entitled "Amour de Deutz", was released in July.
Apart from performing, Paul Edmund-Davies has a music writing and recording company for television and video with LSO Principal Percussionist, Neil Percy. Their first CD, entitled "Ball & Biscuit", featuring their own compositions, was released on the Black Box label in May 1999 and has subsequently been played on Jazz FM.
Paul is Professor of Flute at the Guildhall School of Music and has also been involved in editing several books of music entitled "The Flautist's Collection".
