Your Future Streaming Royalties

Monday 24th March 2025

Streaming Royalty negotiations between the MU, the record companies and the Government are about to start.

To all musicians at MAS,

This will affect the future of all of us.

Streaming Royalty negotiations between the MU, the record companies and the Government are about to start.

I believe these negotiations will affect the income of every musician who’s ever made recordings when they are not the main artist.

The effects of these negotiations will be felt for decades to come.
Streaming is taking over from radio broadcasts. So far there have been zero royalties from audio streaming for any UK orchestral members or backing musicians.

My proposal is that the MU should start the negotiation from the position of asking for the same royalty rates for streaming as we've had for radio broadcasts since 1996 when they started.

(A much lower rate is being considered).

If you feel your PPL payments are too small to bother with, this is your chance to make them more worthwhile!

Please help add weight to my proposal, (or not if you choose), by taking part in this straw poll.

Please forward this message to other MU members and talk about it with colleagues.

We'll only get one chance to negotiate for Streaming Royalties and we need to speak with one clear voice if we’re going to protect our future.

Thank you,

Pete Lale
