Harp and Flute Duo
WELSH HARPIST Deian Rowlands studied at Wells Cathedral School with Ann Griffiths, followed by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Manon Morris, Bryn Lewis and David Watkins. During his studies, he was awarded scholarships by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the Arts Council of Wales, the Craxton Memorial Fund, the Leverhulme Trust, S4C, the Peggy and Maldwyn Hughes Scholarship, the GSMD Orchestral and Ensemble Award 2002, as well as the Open Instrumental Blue Ribbon at the 2002 National Eisteddfod of Wales.
Deian has performed as a soloist and chamber musician all over the UK as well as in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the USA. He made his
Wigmore Hall debut in 2002 with Ravel's 'Introduction and Allegro.' He has worked extensively with many of the countries leading singers, including Jeremy Huw Williams, Fflur Wyn, Rhys Meirion, Andrew Rees and John Lofthouse. He regularly performs with Britain's leading orchestras and conductors and toured Asia as principal harpist with the London Festival Orchestra in 2001.
Deian works for the Live Music Now! recital scheme with flautist Nicki Phillips. They have performed in festivals all over the UK, and made their BBC Proms debut in 2004.
Deian's TV appearances include the BBC's production of 'Byron', McFly's'It's all about you, Songs of Praise 9/11 memorial and Bryn Terfel's Faenol Festival, S4C's Noson Lawen and S4C's Opera Night from the Feanol 2005.
Deian has recorded a CD of meditative music for harp with composer Mike Roberts as well as a flute and harp cd for Kissan Productions.
Deian's Lyon & Healy harp was bought with the kind financial assistance of the Countess of Munster Musical Trust.
NICKI PHILLIPS studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she completed the Maters Degree in orchestral Training with Sarah Newbold, Philippa Davies, Ian Clarke and Sam Coles. During her studies, she performed in masterclasses with Sir James Galway, Emily Bynon, Clare Southworth and Goran Marcusson. She also performed with the LSO and Philharmonia orchestra.
Nicki now works as a freelance flautist in London, and combines her playing with teaching posts at the Yehudi Menuhin School of Music, Sutton High School for Girls and Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College. She performs in ensembles all over the UK, and performed as soloist with the London Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Christopher Warren-Green in 2003.
In 2002 she formed a flute and harp duo with harpist Deian Rowlands. They work extensively for the Live Music Now! recital scheme, and have performed in festivals all over the UK, including Criccieth, Fishguard. St David's, Cambridge, Windsor, Wetherby, and the North Wales International Music Festival. As a duo they have performed recitals at St David's Hall and the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, as well as performing for the Very Reverend Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury. They made their BBC Proms debut in 2004 with a performance of 'SU' by Zhou Long. In 2005 they commissioned Three Miniatures for flute and harp by John Metcalf, thanks to the Arts Council of Wales.
